For the upcoming Firefox 11 release, we would like to create stickers (and other swag) for Firefox mobile.

Firefox for Android does not currently have much of a separate visual identity since we're just using the Firefox logo, is there a way we can make it distinct? Perhaps by mashing up the Android logo/re-iterating on the FoxDroid image?

Some themes for inspiration: New, powerful, smart, freedom

Open to suggestions!

Deadline: February 17
Hey Jaclyn... happy to help here, but I think this starts to mix with related conversations around the visual identity for mobile and how we can better differentiate the two given that we have the same logo. It's been an ongoing discussion yet to be fully resolved. So, I just want to make sure we're not creating sticker sheet (and other swag) that will conflict with that.

If the goal is to have something to hand out around Firefox 11, can we focus on a single sticker (vs. a sticker sheet) that communicates "mobile" in a fun way vs. doing a design that's applied across a number of items and starts to appear like the new "mark" for Firefox on Android ?

We could, for example.. do a sticker that has an illustrated mobile device with the Firefox logo inside it and design elements around it (perhaps an upgraded version of the one we produced for the launch of Firefox 4)

Thoughts?
Whiteboard: Due 2/17
Good points - how about then we have an emblem (for a single sticker), and then a general Firefox logo with "Firefox for Android" text (which we'll use as the official design for general mobile things)?

I like the idea of upgrading the past mobile device image. Can we make it a little shinier and maybe less cartoony? I want it to have a powerful/high-techy feel to it. Another thing we can also think about is how to incorporate Android elements into it since that would make the connection to Android a lot more straightforward than "mobile".
Sounds good. So, to confirm:

* One sticker that's more illustrative with a phone graphic and decorative pieces (laurels etc) similar to the FF badges we had done, but less "cute"

* Another sticker with FF logo, more straight forward, and the "Firefox for Android" message

* Incorporating the Android logo here somehow where appropriate. Do we have permission to use that freely btw? Just checking.

Correct!

Hm...I will ping legal for the last bit
Thanks. hoping Monique can take this on, stay tuned.
According to the branding guidelines for the Android robot (http://www.android.com/branding.html) we have permission to use it:

01/ Android Robot

Can be used, reproduced, and modified freely in marketing communications. Our standard color value for print is PMS 376C. Our online hex color is #A4C639.

When using the Android Robot or any modification of it, proper attribution is required under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution license.
Great, thanks.
Jaclyn, Monique is on board, but timing is tight. Can you let me know if the 17th is firm, or if we have some wiggle room there?
There should be wiggle room, I don't think printing the stickers should take more than a week-ish.

How's the week of Feb 27?
I can definitely do it with the new deadline! Looking forward to it. Tara I'd like to have a quick call to make sure we are on the same page before I start. Any reference to links regarding items mentioned in this string would help!

Thanks
Thanks Monique, and welcome to Bugzilla.

to recap our chat from yesterday:

* Size:  min 2.5 x 2.5  max  3.5 x 3.5
* Shape: circle is preferred, but rectangular works too
* The above two is flexible from my perspective depending on what you think works best.

* Design: less cartoony, more photorealistic. More crisp, sleek, and bold. More details and decorative accents. More sophisticated and serious vs. whimsical.
* Style reference:  Gowalla badges

* Should include the FF logo.
* Nice to include the Android green dude, If it makes sense. But not required.
* Graphic can be either of the illustrations I sent you (no need to re-illustrate)

* Copy is "Firefox for Android" Jaclyn, can you please confirm? is that all we want to say?

* Budget: Monique, lets cap this at 10 hours.

Thanks Tara and Monique!

Copy: Firefox for Android

And if there is room/makes sense for a link: www.mozilla.org/mobile - not required
Got it. Thanks for the recap and I'll get going!
Friendly ping. Monique let us know how things are going :) Thanks!
I'll have something to show early next week Tuesday? but until then...I'll be packing and moving!
Hi Monique - how are the designs coming along? Thanks!
working on it today! (in fact right now). I'll send you something as soon as I can.
Hey Monique,

Any progress?

Thanks!
Talked to Monique today. She's working on it. Stay tuned!
Hello,

Attached is the first stab at the Android sticker. These little guys can be time consuming so I'm cutting myself off to show you where I'm at and on the right track. There are two options and ideally we'd choose one and modify. But we could also mix and match. Let me know your thoughts! So far I've spent 4.25 hours on this project.

-Monique
Hi Monique

I'm leaning more towards the 2nd one, but was wondering if there was another way we could incorporate the Android logo instead of it being on the "peel" of the sticker. Also, the battery and signal icons in the phone are not aligned correctly, they should be at the edge of the right hand side rather than in the middle. Can we also make the "Firefox for Android" text stand out a bit more?

Thank you!
Thanks Monique. I agree with Jaclyn, here are my quick 2 cents:

* I prefer 2nd one overall. colors work better and things seem to pop nicely.
* I do like the idea of a ribbon, and it helps to highlight the main message nicely, but I rather not cover the phone since it'll then look like a vague rectangle vs. a phone device
* On that note, do we *have* to show a phone? Perhaps we can lean on a typographic solution, to pump up the message, and rely on Firefoxy colors, and perhaps a cropped logo, vs. forcing a device graphic in there. Jaclyn how do you feel about that?
* otherwise, I prefer version #2, with some tweaks and more frills :)
* Also, I think the peel is cute, but probably will look a little weird for the sticker. But i like the creativity there :)

I'm up for this idea!

Quite note that we have more wiggle room for these stickers now. We can push back to end of February.

Thanks!
Perfect. more time is always good!

Monique let us know your thoughts :)

Thanks for your comments. So let me summarize the comments;

- remove the peel but then I need a place to put the Android guy. I can try him peeping in from the bottom in that blue bar?
- I can align the battery items, I mirrored the illustration and then removed the time because it was backwards but I'll fix.
- I can add more frills in the side area.
- I can try a version without a phone but it will be less of a quick read. Juice up the type treatment.
- are you open to a ribbon treatment if the phone is gone? Not sure if that would work but just an idea.
- regarding timing, I had a due date of the 27th for this??

let me know if I got everything.
Thanks Monique, inline:

> - remove the peel but then I need a place to put the Android guy. I can try
> him peeping in from the bottom in that blue bar?

Sure, but as noted earlier I don't think the android dude is a required graphic, just a nice to have since he's well recognized and associated to Android...so, wanted to leverage that if we could.

> - I can try a version without a phone but it will be less of a quick read.
> Juice up the type treatment.

Thanks. In my head a version without the phone would look quite nice. Focusing on the message in type (and sprinkling in additional frills and stylized elements). Perhaps mixing in the FF logo cropped (and maybe the android dude). I dont' think the phone graphic is required...especially since it ends up looking like a rectangle with a logo in it vs. a mobile device with actual website content.

> - are you open to a ribbon treatment if the phone is gone? Not sure if that
> would work but just an idea.

Yup, definitely open to it. But I do like the color palette of version #2, fwiw.

> - regarding timing, I had a due date of the 27th for this??
It was due on the 17th :) now it's moved to the 29th.

THANKS.
Hi all, we have even more wiggle room now - April 30 hand off

Excellent! Will get it to you way before then. ;)
Hey guys, how are things going here? Just wanted to make sure we don't forget about this bug (even though we've got more time)
Did not forget about it! :) Just finishing up some big projects and will hop back on this. Will pick up where we left off next week. One thing I wanted to note is that I already spent 8.5 hours on this and Tara you wanted me to cap it at 10. Just want you to be aware that we are getting close. Will have something to look at next week based on your last comments above.

-Monique
Thanks Monique. Not sure if 2 hours is enough for us to finish, but once you get back into this... maybe you can let us know how things are going and how much more time you anticipate we'll need to get this right. My focus right now is to get an awesome sticker design :)
Attached are the changes to the Android sticker per your requests. I spent two hours making the changes but feel that I made good progress...and hope you agree!

Let me know your thoughts.
- Monique
Thanks Monique! This is a great second pass and I think we're inching towards the right direction.

I personally like the second option in that the border is thinner, though there are elements of the more bubbly (and glossed) border of #1 that I think is cool. I just think it's a waste of space to have such a thick border given all that we're trying to communicate. So, i vote for the overall shape of #2, personally.

I also really like the little details: dotted lines, line-breaks, and of course... the laurels.

Really like how you've added the Android dude in there too.

Few thoughts on things to tweak:

* I feel like the arrangement of the copy isn't very clean. I'd prefer that they're better aligned. I realize the space is cramped but the content feels a little messy to me. And I feel like one of the logos (FF or Droid) need to be scaled more so they carry more visual impact.

* I think once we establish the design direction, it would be great to incorporate a little more detail. Feels like these need a little more kick to them so they're more exciting. More laurels? some bursts in the background? *something* more.

* I like the blue as well, though I think we could also try Orange as an alternative.

I have a few sketches of what we might do. Attaching those next. Let me know your thoughts.

Jaclyn, please share yours as well.
Thanks again Monique. I'm excited about where these are headed.
One option:

* Thinner border
* Scaled up droid logo / cropped at bottom. perhaps with bursts or something to frame it with an added kick of excitement.
* Wrapped "Firefox for Android" on top. Ideally with "Firefox" having more umph to it. Perhaps it's a different font, or bigger, bolder, etc.
* Laurels / dotted lines on the outside trim.
* Can be orange sticker background, or same blue you already have.

Thoughts?
Another option:

* Thicker border, with wrapped text "Firefox for Android".
* Inside graphic is the FF logo in full or cropped within a central circle.
* Dotted lines / laurels on the bottom trim
* Droid dude at the bottom, like the way you had it (i loved that)
* Can be on orange or blue.

Thoughts?
Actually just to add to that:

* The option with Droid logo as main logo, I think orange background is best to raise the "Firefox" presence.

* The second option with FF Logo in center, can be Blue for better contrast, perhaps.
Cute sketches Tara! I'm leaning towards the one from comment 34

If we have the Android dude more prominent, I agree the "Firefox" should have more oomph snf orange might be better since we don't have the Firefox logo

Cool ideas!
OK I'll make changes and have for you either EOD tomorrow or Monday. The changes you asked for will take several hours FYI...but it's fun! ;)

- Monique
Thanks !

I think it's looking good but needed to cut myself off as I spent 4 hours creating Tara's sketches. Hope you like! Let me know your thoughts.

- Monique
I love these!!! The only comment I have would be for the Android logo stickers - since the Android logo is already there, I feel a smaller "for Android" text might look a bit less glaring
someone also gave a suggestion to give the android guy a tshirt with firefox logo on it
Hmmm, cute perhaps but I vote against a shirt with logo on it :) sorry! I think the Android logo looks great as it is and we don't need to accessorize him. I have a few additional thoughts I'll add to the bug soon and then Monique can wrap this up.
Hi there

Sorry for the slower than expected response time. Here are my thoughts:

* Overall, looking great :)! Thanks so much.

* I like both directions, but if I had to choose I'd definitely go for the Orange/Firefox w/Droid direction simply b/c the other design feels too similar to many other FF stickers we've already done. It's a nice design but not as exciting or unique (to our visual library) than the other ones. Jaclyn, perhaps we can print both? Up to you.

* I do agree with Jaclyn that the ones with the Droid dude are now a little *too* heavy on the Android messaging (both in copy and graphics) Can we try a few things?

--- Reduce the "Android" text or somehow shift the weight more towards "Firefox" ?
--- Try a more Firefoxy orange? I like these colors but they're a little deeper (more reddish) than the standard Firefox orange hue.
--- Perhaps try it on Blue? That might help the Firefox type and Droid dude pop. I think he looks great against Blue.

* Love the droid dude. and the various frills.
* Love laurels :) lets keep those for sure. The burst behind the Droid, etc. as you know, I love these little details. To me, the more the better :)
* I like the type outlined, but I think I prefer it without. Not sure if it's okay that the Droid has a drop shadow on him while the type doesn't? Let me know what you think looks best.

Looking awesome though :) We don't have to do all the above, they are just suggestions on what we can do to tweak before finalizing.
Great suggestions Tara, +1 on all

I'd probably print up both anyway just to give people variety

Thanks Monique!
I should also add that I really like:

* The dotted lines stitched around concept 1 (I have a thing it seems for dotted lines and laurels)
* love the laurels in both concepts
* Prefer the simplicity of the star in concept 1
* like the lines framing "for"
* the yellow ring in concept 2 is cool too. Not as subtle as the dotted lines which can be a good thing.

Another option (sorry for rambling on):

* Take concept one, in blue. But make the border thicker so the "Firefox for Android" has more room and can scale. and Throw in the Droid dude in the center? Just a thought. Maybe it's a horrible idea. That's where Monique steps in for the sanity check :)
(In reply to Jaclyn Fu from comment #46)

Cool! Good to know, and thanks.
So, Monique, that's two designs for ya :) Which means you did so well we can't choose and want both!
Hello,

Thanks for your feedback. Just wanted to make sure that I understand the two versions:

version 1: orange Droid sticker with suggestions/comments above
version 2: blue Droid with suggestions/comments above but I'll put different details on each.

Correct? I'll have these done for Monday.

Have a great weekend and enjoy the fabulous weather!
-Monique
Jaclyn, I think it's worth having two versions with a prominent Droid so we can really drive home that message (and avoid another "firefox" sticker). Cbeard is also very keen on showcasing the Droid dude more. So this is a great opportunity for that as long as the two stickers have some unique style differences (aside from a simple color change) to give people two cool sticker options.

So, Monique... what you described above, to me, is perfect.

Have a great weekend !

I've made the requested changes but feel that the blue version is lacking color now that the FF logo is gone. Maybe you feel differently but let me know!

For version 2, I made the orange more firey but now feel like the Droid guy is sinking into the background so I added a drop shadow.

Let me know your thoughts!

-Monique
Thanks Monique, not sure if it's just me but I can't view the attachment
Tara do you have the same problem? Not sure what is wrong...I downloaded and could open fine. It's a PDF like the rest of the attachments. I can try re-uploading?
Hi false alarm - tried it in a different browser and it worked :)

Hello,

I made some subtle but helpful changes to both the stickers that I think helps them pop more. Yesterday I had a sick baby and was very rushed so wasn't totally happy with what I sent. Would love to get this wrapped up for you! Once finals are decided, I will need to set up for print.

Putting this on Ice for the short term. Updating Due date. And attaching a few of the last mocks that Monique did for reference.

Monique has done some great work so far. We'll just need to pick one of the directions and fine-tune s few details. Once we decide to move forward, the goal will be:

* Striking the right balance between the two brands (Android and FF). We're almost there but need to tweak.
* Ensuring the right color palette to echo Firefox brand.
* Ensuring that the phrase "Firefox for Android" stays connected (visually) vs. broken up if possible.

Jaclyn, sorry but we need to extend the deadline on this. Can you provide another date please based on the latest product release schedule?

Hi Tara, no problem. Let's move this to June 15

Thanks

Hey Tara, any update on this?
Yah,sorry - we de-prioritized it given all that was going on for Android. Lets figure out the best next steps wrt to updating the due date.

Tara and Jaclyn,

Are we taking these badges and doing some finessing/updating on them, or is the plan to redesign them?

Also, do we have the original design files?
I connected with Ty. we're good :) Thanks TY !
Hey TY, how is this coming along?
Im needing to complete two more stickers, but here is a preview of what I have already designed: http://cl.ly/image/0r1B083W1y3T
Looks great so far. Fwiw, I have a slight preference toward the blue one.
Blue one looks great!

Wanted to give a quick ping on wrapping up the sticker designs so we can produce them for MozCamp EU

Thanks!
Adding Ian Barlow on this bug too. He's has also been working on some stickers for FFx for Android: http://cl.ly/image/3w26110v252k
+Sam who will be driving the stickers to production in time for MozCamp EU
hey all, did we ever get these produced? closing this out - please reopen or ping if you need anything else.
